Men’s Basketball at LSU

Hannah MacKinnon, Alexander Stant, Lauren Guidroz

LSU men’s basketball first started in 1909. Since then the uniforms have changed vastly. The teams’ uniforms changed through the styles of their shirts, shorts, socks, shoes, and jersey logos. These changes allowed for easier mobility and more comfortable styles. Through our video, we show the evolution of LSU men’s basketball teams, starting with no distinguishing uniforms in 1909, to slowly trying different looks for mobility and appeal, and now, present day, being sponsored by big brands such as Nike. These changes show how the teams were beginning to think more about being comfortable during their athletic performances, and also the fashion of their uniforms, especially for recruiting new players.

Figure 1: The 1935 national championship LSU basketball team featured a return to “Louisiana” being on the chest compared to just “L” from the early 1930s. They also continued to use belts and in addition, added player numbers on the chest, where it remains to this day. Converse were also the dominant shoe brand and can be seen being worn by the LSU players.

Figure 2: LSU basketball began in 1909, and their uniforms did not have any logos or any specialized equipment besides the basketball. The NBA was not active during this early time, so the blueprints for what should be worn and what equipment were needed were still unknown at the time.

Fig. 3: “Captain Perry”

Figure 3: This photo from the 1920 Gumbo yearbook is of Perry Hague, captain of the basketball team. When LSU basketball initially began in 1909, there were not any major basketball leagues, so the first LSU uniforms were very plain and basic, with no visible markings of the being affiliated with the university. About 10 years later, LSU created a uniform that featured the word “Louisiana” on the chest, accompanied with knee guards, long socks, and mid-thigh length shorts. This was the beginning of LSU’s uniform and continued to evolve over time.

Fig. 4: “LSU 1955 Men’s Basketball Team”

Figure 4 (left) shows the LSU men’s basketball team in 1955 with Coach Harry Rabenhorst. This image shows the styles of the uniforms during 1955. The players wore short sleeve shirts, short shorts, belts, scrunched socks, and high top Converse. They were also pairing their “LSU” logo with their numbers on their jerseys. This shows the transition in their uniforms from the earlier years until the 1950’s.

Figure 5 (below) This image of the LSU men’s basketball team was taken in 1980. The player shooting the ball has a tank top jersey tucked into short shorts, high socks, low top Converse Fastbreaks, and a much nicer logo on their jersey. Also, the opposing player has Nike shoes. Although LSU players didn’t have Nike at this time is shows that Nike was becoming popular. These big transitions in shoes show how basketball teams in the 80’s were breaking away from the traditional high top Converse, and thinking more about comfort and athletic performance.
